As I was driving the kids home from Griff's preschool, Griff started asking me all sorts of questions about some "thing" he saw over a strip mall near our house. He wanted me to tell him what it was and kept trying to describe it. It was like hearing somebody describe a UFO, he was hazy on the color of it (brownishy white at one point) and the size, and I was foggy on whether this thing was moving or stationary over the shopping center. He said it had a propeller, but then he didn't think so. He wanted me to look, but I couldn't see anything obvious in a quick glance and, well, I was driving. Insert mom-like "I have to keep my eyes on the road, Griff" comment.
Well, as I turned, there right in front of me was the UFO. And I have to admit, I had no freakin' clue what it was, it was balloon-like, oddly shaped, but far enough away that I couldn't tell any more about it. Weather balloon? Advertisement balloon? (over subdivisions??) We were headed its way.
As we got closer, the road turned and the object turned, and we could see it was a blimp. Griff said "ohhhh, we were seeing the point of it before." Way cool! It had writing on it and I couldn't read it, so I pursued it.
Turns out it was an actual, bona fide Goodyear Blimp. I think perhaps it was the Spirit of Goodyear. I have absolutely no clue what it was doing over the local neighborhoods. There's a NASCAR race here next week, maybe they were warming up for that? Griff had never seen a blimp and I'm not sure he had ever heard of one, so it was fun trying to explain what it is and how it works. I wish I'd had a camera with me, the thing was practically on top of us!
