On this night
let us light
one little candle fire.
'Tis a sight
burning bright
one little candle fire.
(ok, so we had four...one for each year we've had a child who brought one home from preschool to share during winter break)
Happy solstice, and may you stay warm on the longest night of the year. We may have many cold days ahead of us, but it's nice to know that tomorrow the days start lengthening little by little again, and that before long the world will warm up and bloom!
While you wait for the spring, I recommend sharing the stories in The Return of the Light with your loved ones. And for curious kids who want to understand winter's darkness, Sunshine Makes the Seasons is a nice, simple resource. After all, "axial tilt is the reason for the season!"
