Total family collaboration, even Dan is working hard today, in the trenches of fatherhood, just he is every day. This guy has risen to the challenges of parenting over and over again, and there's nobody I'd rather be doing this work with.
There's a quote making the rounds today, that goes something like "the best thing a father can do for his children is love their mother." To which I say: that is only the very beginning, and I wouldn't rank it "best" at all, because there are a lot of tough moments in fatherhood, moments in which maybe you've gotta disagree with the mother and go to bat for your kids. There are also dads who aren't partnered with a woman, or who are no longer partnered to the biological mother of their children. Being a dad isn't always about being defined by the mom, it's about all the day-in, day-out dirty work and a whole lotta being a team player, no matter who the members of your team or how many. It's about a lot of little moments, sandwiches made and bedtime stories read and worries about who these kids are and how best to meet their needs and your own at the same time.
I guess I'd say the best thing a father can do for his children is to be aware of who they are and what they need, and to be true to those things, no matter what.
Cheers to all the competent, active, engaged dads out there. You're raising amazing kids!
